New koala conservation group on Raymond Island, Victoria to be launched on Wild Koala Day

East Gippsland has suffered habitat and koala loss on a large scale as a result of the devastating bushfires in January, and the koala has become a global symbol of climate change action as a result.

We are fortunate to have on our doorstep a remarkable koala population on Raymond Island, Victoria. Not directly impacted by the fires, the koala population lives comfortably with the residents on the island.

Wild Koala Day 2020 will be celebrated locally with the launch of the Koala Island Foundation Inc. The group has been formed to promote the sustainable management of Raymond Island to benefit its wildlife, the community and visitors.

Community education programs are planned and initiatives from Landcare, the Koala Trail and the new shelter underway, Koalas of Raymond Island, will be supported.

The Koala Island Foundation will be a vehicle for sourcing funding and volunteer support, and will advocate for our koalas. The Paynesville Business and Tourism Authority, Raymond Island Landcare, Koalas of Raymond Island, the Abbey and Ride the Koalas are founding members.
